A Note from the Author Concerning
Rights, Reproductions,
and Permissions

It is my intention in this site to make these images of the Tenniel cartoons readily available as primary source materials to all levels of the educational community, as well as to the public at large.

Each cartoon was scanned at high resolution from original volumes of Punch dating from the years 1860 to 1865. These cartoons, together with their captions and basic identifying information, are in the public domain. This means that they are not subject to copyright restrictions. The digital images of the Tenniel cartoons displayed on this site may be freely copied and used by anyone, for any purpose. The site author’s permission is not required.

You may easily download a JPEG file (scaled at 1024 dpi on the longer side) of any of the Tenniel cartoons from that cartoon's commentary page by following these procedures:

- on a PC, right-mouse button-click on the image, and select "Save Image as...";

- or, on a Mac, click on the image and use your mouse to drag it onto the desktop.

Large TIFF files of the cartoons, suitable for publication, are available on request from the site author; see the contact information below.

The original text portions of this John Tenniel and the American Civil War website are the copyrighted intellectual property of its author, Allan T. Kohl. This original material includes the introductory essay, the indexed chronology of related events, and the commentaries accompanying each individual cartoon. However, the author hereby grants permission to bona fide educational institutions and their affiliated personnel to use and adapt this content in any context or application that is both educational in its intent and completely non-commercial in nature. Acknowledgement of the author and source credit in such uses is customary (and appreciated), but will not be considered an absolute requirement.

This John Tenniel and the American Civil War website should be regarded as a copyrighted "work in compilation," and is not to be copied, reproduced, or re-distributed in its entirety without specific written permission from the author. Users are, however, welcome to link either to the site's home page, or directly to individual pages and image files within the site.
