John Tenniel and the American Civil War

Naughty Jonathan. Punch, Volume 42, January 18, 1862, p. 25

In the last of seven consecutive principal cartoons reacting to the Trent Crisis, Tenniel quotes from his own earlier image of a patient mother and her spoiled child [July 6, 1861]. Little Johnny Russell gloats as his Mother, Mrs. Britannia (the warrior's crested helmet still on her head!), tells him to put away the switches: it will not be necessary to whip Naughty Jonathan after all, since he has apologized and promised to behave. In contrast to Russell's trim bearing and natty attire, poor Jonathan cuts a ridiculous figure as he stands, humiliated and pouting, in his untidy stars and stripes clothing.
